Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on the 24th of August, 1972. DuVernay had a close relationship with her aunt Denise, who encouraged DuVernay to be creative and attracted by the arts. She was a night nurse, allowing her aunt the time she required during the working day to pursue her passion for theatre, literature, and art. DuVernay liked the film West Side Story, which she introduced to her. DuVernay was educated by her mother about how art could serve to promote activism. In the same way, her mother was socially conscious and taught the importance of speaking up through the arts. DuVernay had her summers spent in Lowndes County Alabama, where her father was born and educated. DuVernay's dad recalled the civil rights protests on the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the close town of Selma Alabama. Her time in Selma were later the inspiration to write a script for a movie about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay earned her graduation certificate at Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. DuVernay went to the University of California Los Angeles following her graduation, and was awarded diplomas in English and African American Studies. DuVernay began to produce for the broadcast industry while she was in her school. DuVernay began as an intern with CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being given duty of looking after the residence and scrutinizing the waste of one of members of the juries. Her tasks left her disappointed with journalism, and she decided to go into the public relations sector. DuVernay began her career as a junior assistant to publicity at a small film studio, right after graduating from college. In 1999, she launched her own business of public relations called The DuVernay Agency. The agency has launched a wide range different lifestyle and promotional networks such as Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
